3 Act Math Task Sugar Cubes

During a warm up in 5/6 math last week, we were solving a problem about the sugar in Mountain Dew.  This led us to a conversation about sugar cubes.  Several students were trying to estimate the weight in grams of a sugar cube.  Inspired by their work, we created this three act math task to solve together.

The explorers have been busy counting collections during math time.  Here is one of our first graders counting her collection by 10's!

In the math room, we have a huge jar of seashells and today one of our first graders decided to figure out how many seashells we have.  He arranged them in groups of 10 and here is what it looks like:

Using Number Cards

At ACS, all kids in grades K-4 have a math box.  It is full of little math games and activities that kids can do alone or with a partner to practice math.  One of the things in math boxes is number cards.  Here is one way we use number cards in our math boxes.

Today in 5/6 we reviewed what we know about divisibility rules by having pairs of students make posters and present their understanding of divisibility rules.

What Can You Build With Triangles?

What Can You Do With 3 Triangles?

The third and fourth grade class looked at this project where someone took 4 square frames and made a bunch of things out of them.  They took the ideas they saw in what you can make with 4 squares and decided to see what they could make with 3 equilateral triangles. 

Here is what they found!

After sharing lots of ideas about what you can build with 3 triangles, we put more triangles together and made other things.

Zukei Puzzles

The 5/6 class has been playing around with solving Zukei puzzles.  They are either really easy or really challenging depending on who you ask when.  If you want to try them out for yourself, you can print a set here!

Spring is Here!

The second and third graders made tissue paper flowers to celebrate spring and review some shapes and fractions!
