One of our sixth graders recently got a coin counting jar and made this three act math task for you to solve! This task was inspired by the work of Graham Fletcher and his three act math tasks.
Act 1
What do you notice? What do you wonder?
Act 2: The total amount of money in the jar was $2.00
During Explorers math today, we learned make 10 go fish. In this game, numbers that go together to make 10 are the pairs. When we are ready for a bigger challenge, we can choose to play make 20 go fish! For kids who REALLY want a challenge, we have make 100 go fish.
Kids in grades 2, 3 & 4 have planted seeds and have been learning about measurement as their plants grow. A few times a week, they measure how much water they give their plants in milliliters. They then measure the height of their plant using centimeters, inches or fraction of an inch. Today the 3/4 class took the data from today's plant measuring and created a line plot. Plants will be going home later this week!
Last week, our fifth grade friends joined the explorers for math buddy time. A great time was had by all, here is a reflection from the students on why they love math buddy time
Some pictures of math in action!
A big thank you to the fifth graders for demonstrating respect and responsibility with our youngest math learners!
The 5-6 Math team recently did a presentation on Math Menu at a school board meeting. Math menu is how we personalize learning in math class and offer students choice in their learning.
Here are some math menu in action shots from classrooms this week!

Act 1:
What do you notice? What do you wonder?
How much do the math books weigh? Make an estimate you know is to low, make an estimate you know is to high. What information would help you narrow down your estimate?
This month, our focus at ACS has been on honesty. The fifth and sixth graders wrote, rehearsed and performed skits to show different situations where honesty is important. They preformed them at all school meeting this past Tuesday.
